If you own acreage in the Carolinas, trails make your land more enjoyable and more accessible. Whether you want ATV trails for weekend riding, hiking paths through your woods, equestrian trails for your horses, or access roads to reach the back of your property, A&S Brushworks cuts clean trails through terrain that would be impossible to clear by hand.
Our forestry mulching equipment grinds vegetation into a natural mulch surface that is immediately usable. You ride, walk, or drive on it the same day we finish.
ATV and UTV trails
ATV trails are one of our most popular requests from rural property owners in York County, Lancaster County, and the surrounding area. We cut trails 6 to 8 feet wide through woods and brush, creating a smooth mulch surface that is ready to ride on immediately.
We can follow a route you have flagged, or we can walk your property with you and suggest a layout that takes advantage of the terrain — ridge lines for views, creek crossings at the best spots, and loops that give you the most trail per acre.
Hiking and walking paths
Not every trail needs to be wide enough for an ATV. We cut narrower hiking paths — 4 to 6 feet wide — for property owners who want to walk their land without fighting through brush. These paths work well for connecting a house to a pond, running through a wooded section of your property, or creating a nature walk for family and guests.
The mulch surface is comfortable to walk on and naturally suppresses weed regrowth, so the trail stays clear longer between maintenance visits.
Equestrian trails
Horse owners in the Rock Hill and Lake Wylie area often want riding trails through their wooded acreage. We cut equestrian trails 8 to 10 feet wide, which gives enough room for mounted riders with overhead clearance. The mulch surface provides good footing for horses — better than bare dirt or loose rock.
We account for low-hanging branches and overhead clearance during cutting, so you get a trail that is comfortable to ride without ducking or weaving around obstacles.
Access roads and property roads
Sometimes you need to get a truck or tractor to the back of your property and there is no road. We clear paths 10 to 14 feet wide that serve as permanent access roads. These can be left as mulch surface for light use, or graded and graveled for heavier traffic.
Access road clearing is also useful for easement access, reaching hunting stands, or opening up routes to ponds and outbuildings on rural properties.
Custom widths and Lake Wylie trails
Every property is different, and we cut trails to whatever width makes sense for your use. We are not locked into standard dimensions. If you want a 5-foot trail that widens to 10 feet at a clearing, we can do that. If you want different widths along different sections, we work with your plan.
We serve property owners around Lake Wylie, Tega Cay, Fort Mill, and throughout the Greater Charlotte area. Waterfront properties often benefit from trails connecting the house to the shoreline or running along bluffs and ridges with lake views.
Trail types and dimensions
Trail width is not one-size-fits-all. The right dimension depends on what you plan to use it for, how much traffic it will see, and whether you need room for two-way passing. Here is a breakdown of the most common trail types we build in the Rock Hill and York County area:
- 4-foot single-track hiking trails. These are the narrowest trails we cut. They work well for personal walking paths through wooded property, nature trails for guests, or connecting your house to a pond or creek. A 4-foot width is comfortable for single-file foot traffic and keeps a natural, woods-y feel.
- 6 to 8-foot ATV and UTV trails. This is the sweet spot for recreational riding. Six feet handles a standard ATV with room to spare. If you ride a side-by-side UTV or want a little extra breathing room on turns, go with 8 feet. Most of our ATV trail customers in Lancaster County and southern York County land on 7 feet as a comfortable middle ground.
- 8 to 10-foot equestrian trails. Horses need width and overhead clearance. We cut equestrian trails at 8 to 10 feet wide and clear overhead branches to approximately 12 feet. This gives mounted riders room to pass vegetation without brushing against it, and it prevents horses from spooking at tight spots. The mulch surface is forgiving on hooves and provides reliable traction in wet weather.
- 10 to 14-foot access roads. When you need to get a truck, tractor, or heavy equipment to the back of your property, 10 to 14 feet is the range. Twelve feet is wide enough for a full-size pickup with a few inches to spare on each side. Fourteen feet allows two vehicles to pass each other slowly. These wider paths can double as fire breaks on larger rural properties.
We can also vary the width along a single trail. A common setup is a narrower 6-foot path through the woods that opens up to 12 feet at a turnaround point or staging area. We will work with whatever layout makes sense for your land.
Terrain we handle
York County and the surrounding area are not flat. The terrain between Rock Hill and Lake Wylie is full of rolling hills, creek bottoms, and wooded slopes that make trail building more interesting — and more technical — than cutting a straight line through a flat field. That is exactly the kind of work our equipment is built for.
Lake Wylie slopes and bluffs. Properties along Lake Wylie often sit above the waterline on sloped terrain. Cutting a trail from the house down to the shoreline means working on grades that would be dangerous with a traditional dozer. Our Kubota compact track loader handles these slopes safely, and the tracks keep traction on soft or leaf-covered ground. We can cut switchbacks on steeper grades so the finished trail is comfortable to walk or ride without feeling like you are sliding downhill.
Creek crossings. Many properties in Fort Mill, Tega Cay, and rural York County have creeks running through them. We cut trails right up to the creek bank and pick crossing points where the ground is firm and the banks are low enough to cross safely. For ATV trails, we look for spots with a hard bottom — rock or packed gravel — that will hold up to repeated crossings without turning into a mud pit.
Rolling hills of York County. The piedmont terrain between Rock Hill and the North Carolina line is characterized by gentle to moderate hills with hardwood and pine mix. We route trails along ridge lines when possible to give riders and hikers better views and drier footing. Where trails need to cross a low spot, we can discuss drainage options to prevent standing water from washing out the trail surface over time.
Dense undergrowth. Some properties have not been maintained in years, and the brush is thick enough that you cannot walk through it, let alone flag a trail route. We handle that. Our mulching head chews through privet, honeysuckle, briars, small hardwoods, and pine thickets. If you can point us in the general direction, we will cut through it and open up terrain you may not have seen clearly in years.
Trail clearing pricing
Trail clearing is priced differently from open-acreage clearing because trails are long and narrow. We typically quote by the linear foot or by the job rather than per acre. The cost depends on three main factors: trail width, vegetation density, and terrain difficulty.
A straightforward ATV trail through moderate brush on flat to gently rolling ground is the most affordable. Wider access roads, heavily wooded sections with large-diameter trees, and steep or rocky terrain will cost more per foot. We provide free on-site estimates for every job — we will walk the route with you, discuss your goals, and give you a firm price before any work begins.
Trail clearing FAQs
We can cut trails from as narrow as 4 feet for single-track hiking paths up to 12 feet or wider for access roads and equipment paths. The width depends on your intended use — ATV trails typically run 6 to 8 feet, equestrian trails 8 to 10 feet, and access roads 10 to 14 feet. We will discuss width options during your estimate.
After mulching, the trail surface is covered with a layer of ground wood chips. It is smooth enough for ATV riding and hiking immediately. For equestrian use, the mulch surface actually provides good footing. If you need a harder surface for vehicle access, we can discuss additional grading or gravel options.
Yes. Our Kubota compact track loader is designed for uneven terrain. The tracks provide excellent traction on slopes and soft ground. We regularly cut trails through the rolling hills and creek bottoms common in York County and the surrounding area. Very steep grades may require switchback routing, which we can help plan.
