Forestry Mulching in Gaffney, SC — What to Know Before You Book

By Corey, Owner of A&S Brushworks··5 min read

Gaffney sits about 55 miles from our home base in Rock Hill. That's roughly an hour and fifteen minutes up I-85, depending on traffic and which part of Cherokee County the job is in. We work in Gaffney regularly, but the drive-out means there are a few things worth covering before you pick up the phone.

A&S Brushworks is a two-man crew — Corey and Sam — running a Kubota SVL 97-3 with an FAE forestry mulching head. We handle trees up to 8 inches in diameter, thick brush, undergrowth, and overgrown property lines. We don't do full-scale timber harvesting, but for most residential and rural clearing needs in the Gaffney area, our setup is the right fit.

Scheduling and Drive-Out for Cherokee County

Because Gaffney is about an hour from Rock Hill, we typically batch Cherokee County jobs together when possible. If you reach out and we already have a job booked in the Gaffney area that week, we can often schedule yours the same day or the next day to keep drive-out costs reasonable for everyone.

We don't charge a separate mobilization fee for Cherokee County, but the drive time does factor into how we schedule. For smaller jobs especially, grouping with other nearby work makes the most sense. The earlier you reach out, the easier it is to fit your project into a run up I-85.

The good news is that I-85 access to Gaffney is straightforward. We're not fighting mountain roads or single-lane bridges — it's a clean highway drive with easy access to most properties in the area.

Minimum Acreage and What Makes Sense

We don't have a hard minimum, but for a job 55 miles from our shop, clearing a quarter-acre doesn't make financial sense for either party. As a general rule, jobs in Cherokee County work best when they're at least a half-acre, and ideally an acre or more.

If you've got a smaller area — say a fence line or a single property boundary — give us a call anyway. If we're already headed to Gaffney for another job, we can sometimes add a smaller project at a fair price. It just depends on the schedule.

Typical Job Types We See in Gaffney

Cherokee County has a mix of rural acreage, older homesteads, and newer development. The jobs we handle most often in the Gaffney area include overgrown lot clearing for new construction or mobile home placement, property line clearing where the boundary has been swallowed by trees and brush, pasture reclamation where fields have grown up in pines and hardwoods, and right-of-way or easement clearing along power lines and access roads.

Gaffney has a lot of properties that were farmed or pastured 20 or 30 years ago and have since grown up. That kind of regrowth — mostly pines, sweetgum, and brush under 8 inches — is exactly what a forestry mulcher handles best. One pass and the ground is covered in mulch instead of tangled brush.

What We Need from You

When you call or fill out a quote request, the most helpful things you can tell us are: how many acres need clearing, what kind of vegetation is on the property (brush, small trees, large hardwoods), whether the terrain is flat or sloped, and how we can access the site with a skid steer on a trailer.

Photos help a lot. Even a few cell phone pictures of the worst areas give us a realistic idea of what we're working with. We can give a rough estimate from photos and a conversation, and we'll confirm pricing once we see the site in person if needed.

You can reach us at (336) 467-4572 or through the quote form on our website. We'll get back to you quickly and let you know when we can fit your Cherokee County project into the schedule.
