Land Clearing & Trail Work in Blacksburg, SC

By Corey, Owner of A&S Brushworks··5 min read

Blacksburg is a small town in northern Cherokee County, tucked into the foothills right near the North Carolina line and Kings Mountain State Park. It's rural, it's hilly, and a lot of the properties out there have been growing over for years. That's exactly the kind of work A&S Brushworks handles.

We're based in Rock Hill — about an hour north on I-85 and then off into the back roads. Blacksburg isn't a place every contractor is willing to drive to, but we service Cherokee County regularly and know the terrain. Our Kubota SVL 97-3 with the FAE forestry mulching head handles up to 8-inch diameter trees, thick undergrowth, and tangled brush in a single pass.

Foothills Terrain and What That Means for Clearing

The land around Blacksburg isn't flat York County farmland. You've got rolling hills, creek bottoms, rocky ground, and slopes that require a machine with solid traction and a skilled operator. The Kubota SVL 97-3 is a tracked machine, which gives us stability on grades that a wheeled skid steer would struggle with.

That said, steep terrain does slow things down. If your property has significant elevation changes or rocky outcroppings, the job will take longer than the same acreage on flat ground. We're honest about that upfront — we'd rather give you a realistic timeline than rush through difficult ground and do a mediocre job.

We've cleared land in the Blacksburg area with everything from gentle pasture slopes to steep wooded hillsides. Each one requires reading the terrain and adjusting the approach. That's part of why you hire experienced operators, not just a machine.

Hunting Trails and Access Roads

A lot of the property owners who call us from the Blacksburg area are hunters. The foothills around Kings Mountain have solid deer and turkey populations, and maintaining access trails through wooded property is an ongoing job.

Forestry mulching is one of the best ways to cut and maintain hunting trails. We can open up a trail 8 to 12 feet wide through thick woods, grinding everything down to ground-level mulch. The result is a clean, walkable path that's also wide enough for an ATV or side-by-side. The mulch layer keeps regrowth down for a solid season, and touch-up clearing the following year is fast.

We also clear around deer stands, open up sight lines, and create access from road frontage to back acreage. If you've got 20 or 40 acres of hunting land that's getting harder to navigate every year, a day of mulching can open the whole property back up.

Rural Estate and Homesite Clearing

Blacksburg also has a fair number of inherited properties and older rural estates where the land hasn't been maintained in decades. We get calls from people who've inherited a family property and can't even walk it because the undergrowth is so thick.

Forestry mulching clears that kind of overgrowth efficiently. We can take a property from impenetrable brush to open, usable land in a day or two, depending on acreage. Pricing in Cherokee County typically runs $1,500 to $5,000 per acre depending on density, terrain, and tree size. Properties with mostly brush and saplings fall toward the lower end; dense hardwood regrowth on steep ground pushes toward the upper end.

If you're planning to build, place a manufactured home, or simply reclaim the land for use, mulching is the first step. It leaves the soil intact, prevents erosion with the mulch layer, and avoids the cost of hauling debris offsite.
